Travel Reminders for WFU Community

There have been recent reports of increased activity of immigration enforcement at airports in the U.S. for domestic travelers.

In light of those reports, ISS would like to remind our community of our guidance surrounding documentation that should be carried during travel, and provide additional detail.

At this time this enforcement is reported to be targeted at people in the following circumstances:

• Individuals with pending adjustment of status (green card) and/or asylum applications who do not maintain an underlying nonimmigrant visa status. 
• Individuals in a period of authorized stay based on a timely filed extension or change of status petition, including those eligible for continued employment authorization under the 240-day rule, where applicable. 

For further advice please seek your own legal council if you are in the above situation prior to travel.

Generally refer to our following current guidance for travel Summer 2026, but for ALL domestic travel we are suggesting the following items to be carried.

• F-1/J-1 Students and their dependents
  • Domestic Travel: Carry the following documents:
    • Passport
    • I-20/DS-2019
    • VISA
    • Copy of I-94 Entry
    • Copy of your Class Schedule or if you are approved for OPT your EAD
• H-1B/J-1 Scholars/TN/Other Employment Based VISA and their dependents:
  • Domestic travel: Carry the following documents:
    • Passport
    • DS-2019 (J-1 Scholars only)
    • I-797 Approval Notice (H-1B, O-1, TN only)
    • VISA
    • Copy of I-94 Entry
  • Note:  If you changed your status to H-1B from within the U.S., and have not traveled and reentered, your most recent I-94 will be located at the bottom portion of your I-797 approval notice.

• Other Precautions:
  • We’re advising non-citizens to review social media and electronic devices for possible review at ports of entry. (See linked flyer: “Electronic Device Searches at Port of Entry“)
