Summer Travel Advisory: Non-Immigrants
The Center for Immigration Services and Support (ISS) is providing the following travel guidance due to increased federal enforcement concerns.
Current Status: The U.S. Government has not, as April 4, 2025, announced a travel ban or restrictions. We are advising that non-citizens limit non-essential international travel at this time.
Important Travel Advisory:
- High-Risk Countries: Avoid Non-Essential/Emergent Travel: ALL non-immigrants from the following countries should avoid any non-essential/emergent international travel over the summer break:
- Afghanistan, Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Belarus, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Cape Verde, Chad, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Gambia, Haiti, Iran, Kitts and Nevis, Laos, Liberia, Libya, Lucia, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Myanmar, North Korea, Pakistan, Republic of Congo, Russia, Sao Tome and Principe, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Turkmenistan, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Yemen, Zimbabwe.
IF you are NOT from one of the above countries, please see our advice for travel for essential and emergent travel needs:
- F-1/J-1 Students and their dependents
- International Travel: Refer to our webpage for travel information and required documentation: Travel & Re-Entry.
- If your international travel is university-sponsored/funded in any way, then you are also required to complete the International Travel Forms process.
- Domestic Travel: Carry the following documents. IF staying in Winston-Salem, carry printed paper copies only:
- Passport
- I-20/DS-2019
- VISA
- Copy of I-94 Entry
- Copy of your Class Schedule or if you are approved for OPT your EAD
- International Travel: Refer to our webpage for travel information and required documentation: Travel & Re-Entry.
- H-1B/J-1 Scholars/TN/Other Employment Based VISA and their dependents:
- International Travel: Refer to our webpage for travel information and required documentation: Travel & Re-Entry.
- If your international travel is university-sponsored/funded in any way, then you are also required to complete the International Travel Forms process.
- Domestic travel: Carry the following documents. IF staying in Winston-Salem, carry printed paper copies only:
- Passport
- DS-2019 (J-1 Scholars only)
- I-797 Approval Notice (H-1B, O-1, TN only)
- VISA
- Copy of I-94 Entry
- Note: If you changed your status to H-1B from within the U.S., and have not traveled and reentered, your most recent I-94 will be located at the bottom portion of your I-797 approval notice.

- Other Precautions:
- We’re advising non-citizens to review social media and electronic devices for possible review at ports of entry. (See linked flyer: “Electronic Device Searches at Port of Entry.“)
- Participation in the American experience is vital. Recent actions by the federal government, and media reports indicate that non-citizens who participate in protests and demonstrations could be subject to increased scrutiny by immigration enforcement. Consider avoiding protests and demonstrations.
